maryland here, and western shores of the chesapeake, rain will be arriving shortly. you can see it kind of moving across the region and there it is. you can see it moving. lots of rain here inside the beltway and some pretty heavy rain has re-developed once again south and west to manassas. and the yellows and reds. not done with the rain showers yet and cloudy all day with sort of onagain offagain showers and im bedded in some of these showers, we could be dealing with heavy downpours, as well as the possibility of some thunderstorm activity. so if you hear a rumble of thunder, don't be too surprised. the good news, the temperatures will warm up. and 69 in washington. but we're expecting high temperatures back in the middle 70s. 62 a little cooler at dulles. 62 degrees. bwi marshal, 65. here is the forecast for today. lots of clouds around. the rain showers will be on and off throughout the day today and bring around an umbrella and be ready for rain showers and even if it is not raining in your house at this moment. and it will likely be at some point later today and winds out of the east at 5 miles an hour. more details on the forecast.

because over on this back wall here, there is some post season shirts. those came out when the nationals actually clinched that wildcard. but those didn't sell too well. this is what everybody was waiting for. the east division expect shirts. we have the official shirt, just like the one that the players were wearing last night. and we also have the hats. by the way, if you want to get one of these bryce harper jerseys, they still have some of these. these are the fourth best selling jersey in major leaguse and i have a feeling it may vault up make to three or two before all is said and done. and as we said, the celebrations last night were just amazing. not only from the players in the dugout and back in the locker rooms and then coming out on the field and celebrating with everyone, and we actually talked to a couple of people here who said they were at the game last night, they were so excited, and they couldn't even go to sleep. and they have been waiting so long to be able to say that the nationals are finally a championship team. and they couldn't wait to come here and wear their playoff

pride. >> a little disappointed they didn't wint last night. but pretty neat that awful you're looking at people looking at smartphones and watching strike, strike, for the final out in the pittsburgh game. and all of a sudden, they tell you, it is funny, it wasn't up on the phones, the smartphones, but in the dugout, everybody started cheering. and then you saw like teddy come running out, with his head and stuff like that. and it was really quite exciting. >> how long have you been a fan of washington baseball? >> since they got here, seven years ago. actually, it is a little kid, i went to a senators game. so it is pretty sweet. >> and we also saw a fan this morning coming in and said she was buying one of these shirts for her niece who happens to be a phillies fan. so taking the opportunity to rub it in a little bit even if the nationals can't get one on top of the phillies in this particular series. but we will see in the next couple of days. we will let you know that our facebook fans are chiming in.

the o's lost to the rays 5-3 last night. while the yankees beat the red sox 10-2. both teams have already clinched at least a welcome spot. and have just two games left in the season. in our other top stories now, we are following breaking news, a border patrol agent shot and killed on the border with mexico. the department of homeland security says another agent was wounded in the shooting. and is being air lifted to a hospital. should be okay. and this happened this morning near busby arizona. and the fbi is beginning an investigation to find ow exactly what happened. following up on a story we told you about earlier. a decades old mystery on the way to being solved maybe. scientists at michigan state university are now analyzing soil samples that will help determine whether the remains of jimmy hoffa could be buried in a residential neighborhood. the findings should be released today. hoffa of course was the steamsters boss who vanished almost 40 years ago.

a new tip led to the search. police are not sure the time line of the tipsters account matches up with hoffa's death but investigators say we should learn more today. tony? in local news, four women studying at american university were fondled near campus in just the last week. and yesterday, the university issued a campus alert about the attacks. they started on september 24. and were all reported to cams police yesterday. the women say they were approached from behind. while walking on massachusetts avenue. near the campus. new this morning, prince george's county police are asking for the public's help in solving a deadly hit-and-run. the victim has been identified as 55-year-old michael eugene white. and police believe white was walking along silver hill road, saturday night, around 8:30, when he was struck. police say the car was a white chevy impala that may have front end damage. in pennsylvania, a judge is due to issue a ruling on the

keystone state's voter i.d. law later today. under the law, anyone who wants to vote in pennsylvania, has to show a photo i.d. supporters say it will cut down on voter fraud but others say it will be harder for minorities to vote. president obama is in nevada getting ready for tomorrow's first presidential debate and mitt romney is already in colorado where the debate will be held. at the university of denver, preparations are well under way for the big event. romney is shifting his focus after intense criticism from fellow republicans and highlighting the race as a choice between his plans for the economy and the president's policies. >> i represent a very different course. i will make sure that the young people of today have great jobs tomorrow and have a bright and prosperous future. that's the difference between us. >> who is going to put the most points on the board? >> you are! >> not i. governor romney, he is a good debater. i'm just okay.

>> the president took a break from preparations and got applause when he showed up with pizzas at his las vegas campaign office. it is hard to miss the television ads about question seven in maryland. it is an effort to expand gaming in the state. lawmakers say the expansion would raise revenue for education. but how much of the money will actually go to schools. i spoke with the director of the maryland budget and tax policy institute. it is a nonpartisan organization and he says if voters approve the referendum, there should be close to $200 million that goes into the education trust fund. by the year 2016. >> all of the money will go to the education trust fund and will go to local schools. but the state may then use some of the money it saves because it doesn't have to use tax dollars for that school aid, and use that for health care and public safety, and parks and other good things that we depend on from the state. so it helps the state treasury.

trains are not stopping at dupont circle at this time. tony? >> allison thank you very much. today marks 10 years since the beginning of the sniper attacks that terrorized the dc area. 10 people were killed and three others hurt during the shooting spree. john allen muhammed and lee boyd malvo eventually captured and convicted of the killings. muhammad was executed in 2009. malvo is now 27 years old and serving a life sentence. and in a recent interview, malvo called himself a monster. he spoke with washington post local reporter josh white, taking responsibility for his actions. and seeming to recognize the emorm ty of his brief reign of terror. josh wright is in norway this morning and joins us via skype to talk about his encounters with lee boyd malvo. mr. white, thanks for joining us, sir. >> thank you. >> before we talk about the interview, can you kind of set the stage for me, tell me how this came to be, how you initiated contact and how you

set this up? >> sure. we -- well, i had been one of the reporters who covered these shootings back in 2002. and then the trial of john allen muhammad in 2003. and as we were thinking about how to cover the 10-year anniversary, we wanted to reach out to a number of people who were involved. victim's families. victims of law enforcement. and lee malvo himself. so i wrote him a letter to the state prison in virginia. he wrote back. i set up a meeting with him in person. at red onion. in their visitor's center. through plexy glass am and then he has made a series of phone calls to me the following day that we record and posted on our web site. >> the interview is quite striking. and even illuminating. a couple of years ago, he gave an interview, rather bizarre circumstances, if you ask me, to william shattner of all people. and in that interview, he made some claims about they had killed many more people, and there were accomplices and all that kind of thing.

this interview seems very given. what do you think has changed during the last couple of years. >> well, it seemed to me that he was being very straightforward. and forthcoming. you know, i spoke to him, for a total of a little more than three hours. and he really was offering facts and i believe insight into how he feels today. i think the passage of time allowed him really to come to grips with the whole thing. and pull himself from what he considered to be a brain washing situation, with mr. muhammad. he is 27 now. he is an adult. he has had a lot of time to think about what he did. and what happened during those terrifying days. and i think he really had to search himself. and is trying now to explain the best he can of what happened. and why it happened. and where he is today. >> you note in the article that some police officials and others are not surprised that he is saying these things now,

because, you know, they very much believe he was under the control of john muhammad, and that it takes time for that to dissipate and for you to really come to terms with what has happened. is that how you read this as well? >> well, you know, it is hard to tell what you're walking into, when you set upn interview like this. and i always wanted to talk to him. it was an interview that i felt was important for the context of everything that happened. and i think over time, he has had the ability, not just to grow, but to educate himself. while incarcerated. and to think about this more as an adult than as a child. he was almost 19 years old when the crimes were committed and not much older when he was convicted. he talked about how over time, he was over to pull himself from that youth, and back into more of what he believes himself to be. which is the case of muhammad. i think he has the perspective

of someone who really is guilty and feels guilty for what he did. and has been able to put that in his own context. and i think, you know, as we recorded, it he has a hard time apologizing because he can't find the right words to say. it is a very difficult thing to apologize to people that you killed. and he tries that. and i think we try to characterize that in the story. but it is a very difficult thing for him to express. >> and so, you know, you're not a psychologist or anything, but you have spent some time with him. and the points you're making are very, very interesting, because it is the same wai read it, he can understand what happened, he can express that, he also says, well, what do i say to these people, because it is hard. what do you say to these people? do you think he is remorseful? >> well, all i can say to that is he says he is remorseful. and i think his words are very straightforward. he described himself as being a monster. a ghoul. someone who stole people's lives.

and looking back on, it he realizes that he ruined a lot of lives. not just for those he killed, but everyone that those people interacted with. their families. their friends. their neighbors. the community. washington at large. you know, he expresses remorse. whether or not he is actually remorseful is something i imagine for a psychiatrist or really himself. he does speak of remorse. and he was fairly straightforward. and i think one thing to be very clear about here is there are people who believe that this is some effort on his part to get out of prison. make no mistake. in virginia, there is no parole. he is never going to be able to get out. and i think at this point, he has had some distance from it and what he described to me felt to me like a very straightforward accounting of what happened and how he feels. again, he did express remorse. >> josh white is a local reporter with the washington post. the article is a fascinating article. and you know, anyone who went

american airlines says it will inspect several planes after several seats became loose in flight. the first incident happened saturday on a flight from boston to miami. the second on monday when a flight from new york to miami had to return to the airport. no one was injured. the airline says there may be a problem with the particular model of seats fitting into the track used to secure the seats. check your nut butters. a recall over salmonella fears is expanding.

southern maryland, you haven't seen a whole lot but you can see some showers and downpours later as this whole system kind of pushes off to the east. all right, now let's switch maps. let me show you all of the moisture that we're tapping into. it is a warm front that is sliding through at the moment. our temperatures will top out in the mid-70s today. we will have some humidity out there. kind of summery but you can see the cloud cover and the shower activity continues to bubble up there in southern virginia, and into the carolinas and that will stream north during the course of the day. it will not rain all day long but periods of rain showers around. we certainly have those, this morning. and the temperatures, a little milder than they were 24 hours ago. 69 right now in washington. and 70 this morning in annapolis. and in leonardtown. and upper 50s here north and west. frederick is 59 degrees. and all right, it is a warm front. and once the warmer air moves in. it is actually going to be stuck across the mid atlantic for a um cof days so the temperature -- a couple of days sot temperatures tomorrow with sunshine will be back in the 80s. that l-is something to look forward. to that area of low pressure fills in as it pushes into the

in the best potential for learning. and in all aspects. >> absolutely. we have also seen the effects of their learning and their healthy nutrition, with our lunch and breakfast program. here inside the classroom, when they're learning all kinds of things. they're able to be more focused. they're not worried about having a hungry stomach. >> i was going to to say, i heard stomach aches went down as the program started. >> absolutely. we really see the effects in all parts of their day. and as i said, they're really able to pay attention to what is most important. and understand why that is also happening. so they can take those healthy habits home. >> and be a healthy family. thank you very much. and thank you most importantly for letting us be here and be a part of the program. >> here is bay, the director and joining us once again. i want to talk about the curriculum specifically in terms of what it is that you teach. what are some of the things that they learn? >> well, they are learning children about food and we're teaching children about a 11- week curriculum and teaching

children how to choose healthy foods and how to consume more water and how to distinguish between processed and unprocessed foods and we look at the parts of the process. we have activities with the parents. the children stay home and the parents have be to a part. we are very aware and we have to educate not just the children but also the adults. >> well, as they're learning this here in the classroom and picking these healthy foods and making the right selections, we ran down stairs to the basement where your staff was busy at work. take a look at what goes on here at the kitchen at this school. and as you do that, kind of give me an idea of how you go about organizing and planning and making sure that all the meals that you provide are healthy. >> basically, we have the nutritionist and myself, the cook downstairs, they all help to do the menu. and with the menu, we use all whole grain, fresh fruit and vegetables. we don't serve juices here. once a day, fish.

once a week, fish, i mean italian. and it is a part of all of us. >> what i was reading about the curriculum as well, which obviously you're instituting, putting the meals together, is the food pyramid. which is hard. to try to understand how it works but that is something you teach as well. >> yes, the children learn what is each group of the food pyramid. and it is important for them. and why they needs to eat. it and they need to eat different foods. and i mean from each group, they have to eat something. >> and so with that, you also talk a little bit, you touched on this a little bit, you actually have cooking classes for the parents. >> yes. the need to educate the adults also, to give us the opportunity to start cooking classes with the parents, which we do. and we give them vouchers for the farmer's market. and we teach the parents also to make healthy choice, and how to go and buy local. >> buy local at the farmer's market. which is why the whole farm to school month is all about. which we're celebrating here. and this october. and so i have a feeling that these kids are making good selections, and when they go
